5 Solutions to Digestive Problems for Cats

The most common reason that cats get diarrhea or vomit is due to a change in their food. Just changing from one brand to another can make your cat sick. This is why all cat food bags recommend a gradual switch. The more gradually you switch cat food brands the easier it is on your cats digestive system. There are many other reasons why a cat can have digestive problems. If symptoms persist for longer than 48 hours make sure you get your cat in to see a vet right away.

Here are 5 ways to ease or cure your cats digestive problems.

  1. When your cat is sick necessary intestinal flora gets destroyed. If you give your cat a teaspoon of nonfat unsweetened yogurt it will help to restore the intestinal flora and get his digestive system functioning normal again.  You can give your cat up to three teaspoons per day.
  2. Try fasting your cat for 24 hours. If your cat is a kitten do not withhold food for more than 4 hours. Make sure to provide plenty of fresh water while fasting your cat. If withholding food from your cat makes you feel guilty, feel free to offer him a few teaspoons of nonfat unsweetened yogurt throughout the day.
  3.  Give your cat one or two teaspoons for pumpkin every 6 hours to relieve indigestion, constipation or diarrhea. Make sure that it is 100% pureed pumpkin (not pie filling!). Pumpkin being a natural stool softener will relieve constipation quickly. Pumpkin also contains fiber which will fire up loose stools. I always keep a hand of pumpkin on hand.
  4. Take away the cat food and feed your cat a diet of boiled chicken and cooked rice. This meal is bland so it will provide your cat with some nutrition and will allow for his stomach to start to feel better.
  5. Provide your cat with some kitty grass for an upset stomach. You know how sometimes when you vomit you feel better? The same goes for your cat. Kitty grass is all natural and sold in pet stores. It tends to make cats vomit after they eat it, so its a great way for your cat to get rid of his upset stomach.
